MBPJ allocates over RM90 million to maintain roads, drainage & landscaping

PETALING JAYA, 5 Nov: The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Budget 2015 will give priority to expenditures for road maintenance, drainage and landscaping with an allocation of over RM90 million.

The Mayor Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmah, said that good maintenance culture will be able to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents, in addition to reducing costs.

She said that the low level of maintenance has caused damages, leaks, collapses and creaks to infrastructure and facilities that can be life-threatening.

“It affects the confidence of the people, especially taxpayers in this city, thus making the cost higher, the same as building new infrastructure,” she recently said.

The MBPJ Budget 2015 was presented by Alinah on October 3 that is deficit in nature with the goal for the surplus funds to be used to benefit the people with infrastructure, environmental protection and social development.

Elaborating, Alinah said that RM11.08 million has been allocated for upgrading drains and works to overcome flooding.

Meanwhile, RM20.48 million has been allocated for the maintenance of drains and irrigation, buildings and public facilities, while RM1.29 million has been proposed to appoint a consultant to prepare the Master Plan of the Drainage System.

“We have also set up a ‘Drainage Gang’ and an Irrigation Enforcement Unit to ensure that residents’ complaints can be resolved quickly.

“Apart from that, we have set up a road patrol group. Their job is to patrol and see that potholes are immediately patched.

“If this plan works, we will add another team next year to the existing six teams,” she added.

Other budgets include RM11.85 million for the maintenance of street lights, street furniture, paving, decorative lighting and traffic lights.

Meanwhile, RM24.26 million is allocated for public facilities and businesses; RM7.11 (million) is for the maintenance of offices and buildings.

MBPJ has allocated RM15.53 million for the maintenance of landscaping, the development of green corridors and the Kelana Jaya Community Lake Part and the Rimba Riang Park.
