GHAH: Maintaining Sedition Act makes the people’s future bleak

SHAH ALAM, 27 Nov: The Repeal Sedition Act Movement (GHAH) criticised the move by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak who broke his own promise to repeal the Sedition Act.

“Najib’s decision to maintain the Sedition Act, which he claims will protect the sanctity of Islam and other religions as well as address prompts by some parties to separate Sabah, Sarawak, is clearly malicious.

“This draconian act has been widely misused to detain politicians, activists and whoever criticises the government.

“Najib’s decision will further restrict the freedom of speech and expression, thus making the people’s future bleaker under an undemocratic rule,” said GHAH in a statement today.

Najib announced that the Sedition Act 1948 will be maintained in the inaugurating speech at the Umno General Assembly at PWTC today.

SHAH urged Najib to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and be accountable to the people regarding his promise which he has made many times before.

“Najib should remember that he has repeatedly promised to repeal the Sedition Act and that promise should be honoured,” the statement said.
