SHAH ALAM, 8 Feb: The Selangor government has no plans to amend the Islamic Religious Administration Enactment in regards to the dissolution of marriage before being registered as a convert, as implemented in Negeri Sembilan.

The Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the matter requires a thorough discussion involving related parties if is wished to be enforced in Selangor.

“That is Negeri Sembilan’s plan; we have no plans for amendment.

“If this was to be implemented, it requires discussions with all parties that have power in this issue because it is not as simple as that,” he said after officiating the Selangor Traditional Village Leader Appointment Letter Presentation Ceremony at the Silver Jubilee Hall today.

Prior to this, the Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, said that a non-Muslim needs to dissolve his or her marriage first before being allowed to register as a convert in the state.

In addition, Mohamad said that they also need to make a statutory declaration that states that they have embraced Islam.

He said these two were among the proposed new rules that will be enforced in relation to converts in the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Administrations Enactment 2003.
