Dengue: Improve hospital facilities & manpower

SHAH ALAM, 18 Feb: Additional facilities and manpower needs to be improved to help address the growing problem of dengue.

The Dengkil State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Coordinator, Burhan Aman Shah, said that almost 50 percent of dengue cases in Selangor was due to overcrowding, in addition to a lack of awareness especially in rural areas.

“Hospitals should be concerned about this matter because what is being observed is not a decrease in cases, but an increase. The percentage of deaths has also increased.

“We hope that hospitals will provide additional space such as wards to accommodate the increasing number of patients because there have been reports that a hospital had placed patients along five foot ways causing them discomfort,” he said to Selangor Kini today.

He said that the state government has also been asked to carry out dengue prevention campaigns more effectively so that there is awareness among the people.

“The Ministry of Health has also been asked to expedite the construction and opening of the Shah Alam Hospital because it can provide facilities in accommodating the number of dengue patients, especially in the Klang Valley,” he said.

The Kota Damansara DUN Coordinator, Mohd Radzlan Jalaludin, said that the construction of the Shah Alam Hospital should be expedited and there should not be any more delays because it is causing hardship to the public.

“We hope that there will not be any more delays because there are many dengue cases in Shah Alam.We hope that the Ministry of Health will accelerate the opening so that it can begin operations immediately,” he said.

He said that the existing hospital also must provide additional services involving manpower and medicines to cover the shortages at the moment.

“Additional workers such as doctors are needed to balance the number of dengue patients that are many at this time,” he said.

Previously, there was reportedly congestion at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang to a point where dengue patients had to be transferred to several other hospitals to accommodate the ever increasing number of patients.
