Chempaka by-election witnesses a 5-cornered fight

SHAH ALAM, 10 Mar: The nomination process for the Chempaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election that took place at Dewan Bitara Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Pengkalan CHepa, Kota Bharu, was closed at 10 o’clock this morning.

Citing Bernama, the Election Managing Officer, Ibrahim Bakri Mat Deris, is expected to make an announcement later on the by-election and the voting is scheduled to take place on March 22.

The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who died from prostate cancer on February 12.

Chempaka DUN has 21,890 registered voters comprising of 20,390 ordinary voters, 1,497 early voters and three absentee voters who are overseas.

The five people fighting for the position includes the PAS representative, Chempaka DUN Ulama Affairs Chief Ahmad Fathan Mahmood@Mahamad, who was seen entering the nomination centre to deliver the nomination papers.

The four independents are Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary, 48, Sharif Mahmood, 59, former Kelantan Perkasa vice-president; Fadzillah Hussin, 55, president of Pertubuhan Keturunan Paduka Raja Cik Siti Wan Kembang and Aslah Mamat, 64, a Health Ministry pensioner.
