SHAH ALAM, 8 May: The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) considers the second chance for Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, who has been sentenced to prison in London, as an injustice for other students sponsored by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
The President of ABIM, Amidi Abdul Manan, said that the proposal should not be raised, especially when it is coming from those managing the people’s trust fund and Malay development.
“To me, it is an injustice especially to MARA students. For example, those who have committed lighter offenses have been let go and penalised more heavily.
“Perhaps, some students who were discharged were involved in copying during exams or skipping classes. These are far lighter compared to Nur Fitri’s case involving unnatural sex,” he told Selangor Kini.
He said that what is needed by this student is not a second chance to continue his studies but to provide him with psychological guidance.
He said that Nur Fitri clearly demonstrated an unbalanced attitude and failed to meet the country’s educational philosophy where there should be power in all points.
“Whether physical, emotional, intellectual or spiritual. However, he does not have balance and strength that is emphasised in the national education philosophy.
“But, now they want to give him ‘medicine’ or a wrong solution,” he said.
Amidi said that Mara’s judgement on Nur Fitri is deemed shallow and superficial, especially since the case embarrassed the Malaysian people.
“We hope this matter will not be taken into consideration. The way to help Nur Fitri should be from the point of facing the challenges in his life,” he said.
Nur Fitri, who was sentenced to jail by the Southwark Crown Court in London, will be given the opportunity to continue his studies upon returning to the country.
The recommendation for the 23-year-old to continue his studies at any Mara institution in the country is ‘allegedly’ a second chance and a sign of support toward him.
