CM: Focus on fighting crime, not oppressing people

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Sept: The Chief Minister of Selangor, Mohamed Azmin Ali, urged the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to focus on combating crime instead of calling up political or NGO leaders to provide statements in relation to the Bersih 4.0 rally.

According to him, the people pay taxes to the government to ensure that they are protected by the police, in addition to the rally, that was held on August 29 and 30, went on peacefully and according to provisions of the Constitution.

“I call on the police to see this (curbing crime) seriously to restore the trust and confidence of the people and the international community against the police institution itself.

“This is because the police is an important institution in the democratic system that should protect the peace of the people rather than individuals,” he said.

He said this when asked to comment on the progress of investigations in relation to the Bersih 4.0 rally that witnessed some leaders being reportedly being called upon to help the investigation.

Previously, the Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, issued a statement saying that several party leaders, including the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, will be called upon for being involved in the Bersih 4.0 rally.
