SHAH ALAM, July 23: As of 11am today, only one district in Selangor recorded an unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) which is Port Klang with an API of 103.

According to the Department of Environment (DOE) website, Banting which reported an API of 111 (unhealthy) yesterday evening has dropped today to an API of 94, a medium level.

In addition, Kuala Selangor, Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam recorded API medium AIP readings of 92, 92 and 92 respectively.

In media reports, the DOE explained that the deterioration of the air quality is because the haze crossed the borders and the ozone pollution on the earth’s surface usually occurs in the early evening due to the reaction of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds from motor vehicle exhaust emissions.

The haze which has returned to the country, especially around the costs of Malacca, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, is expected to last for a short period as a result of changes in wind patterns.

In addition to Port Klang, Muar and Bukit Rambai has also recorded unhealthy API readings as of 11 am; 111 and 104 respectively.

API readings between 0 and 50 are categorised as good, 51 to 100 (medium), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy) and dangerous at 300 and above.

Last month, Malaysia experienced severe haze with some areas recording dangerous levels of air pollution causing schools to be closed temporarily.
