Consumers: Federal Government Should Work Hard to Overcome Issue of Rising Prices

SHAH ALAM, 14 Jan: The Federal Government has been urged to control the increase in price of goods, especially daily necessities, such as wet items, after the series of price increases that is deemed to be burdening the lower-income group.

The increase in price of chicken, fish and vegetables at this moment is burdening consumers, however consumers have no other choice than to buy.

A hostel canteen operator, Shida Mat Rashid, 37, said that the increase in wet goods is very significant because it causes daily expenses to increase to over twice the price.

She said as a canteen operator, she has no other choice than to pay the relatively expensive price because she cannot increase prices at will or to change the daily menu.

“The expenses for wet goods previously was only RM400 a week, but now it is RM900.

“The difference is very noticeable for people like me because we would incur losses. But there is no other way because I cannot change the menu at will, and neither can i do that with prices,” she said when met by Selangor Kini here at the Section 6 Market.

A consumer, Zainal Hussin, 60, said that he was shocked by the sharp increase in price of goods, but he is being thrifty at the moment.

“It is better for me to make comparisons before buying an item.

“If fact, our family is begin thrifty when paying for food and so on because we have no other choice,” he said.

For Liza Shamsuddin, 35, she said that she is forced to buy items that she really needs only.

“I need to plan properly because the current situation is not like before, when I could by any item I wish. We need to look at what we need only.

“The price of fish is expensive, even other seafood is expensive. Our family is forced to eat just enough because my family loves to eat seafood,” she said.

She said the difference in grocery expenses is very significant at the moment because currently, her weekly expenses if over RM150 a week compared to RM100 previously.

“Consumers have no choice and we have to accept the price although the increase is rather extreme.

“We urge the government to act quickly to control this series of price increases,” she said.
