Kajang By-Election: PR Does Not Use Racial Composition Formula

SHAH ALAM, 31 Jan: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has never adopted seat division according to racial composition when placing candidates to contest in the elections as practiced by Barisan Nasional (BN).

The Vice President of PKR, Tian Chua, said that the people’s representatives in PR represent Malaysia’s multi-racial and multi-religious society, instead of focusing on certain ethnic groups only.

He said the recent resignation of the former Kajang Assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh, does not mean that the voice of the Chinese in the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) will decrease.

“We do not have Chinese representatives. What we have are representatives for Malaysians. In fact, no discussion regarding the issue of Chinese of Malays ever took place because what is discussed is the people’s issues.

“I myself competed in an area where the majority of voters are Malay. I still won. Representatives of PR are representatives for all.

“The nomination of candidates according to racial composition happens for MCA and MIC in BN and not in PR,” he said, quoted from the Free Malaysia Today portal.

Prior to this, the DNS Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, announced the resignation of Chin Cheh in an officially written letter sent to her personally.

Not long after, the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, announced that the Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was chosen as the candidate to replace Chin Cheh.
