KTI Rejects Federal Government’s Invitation to Visit Incinerators Abroad, Considers it a Waste

SHAH ALAM, 13 Jan: The No Incinerator for Kuala Lumpur (KTI) Action Committee rejected the Federal Government’s plan to take residents of Taman Beringin abroad to visit incinerators elsewhere.

The Chairman of the task force, Isaiah Jacob, said that the taxpayers’ money involved would be better spent on sending all members of Parliament, the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur and officers of the National Solid Waste Management Department to visit the Bukit Tagar landfill.

They said that inviting residents to visit incinerators abroad is a waste of thousands of taxpayers’ ringgits because the trip will be used as a justification to build the incinerator.

“KTI believes that this trip overseas is limited to surveying technology and the advantages of incinerators. What about the negative effects of incinerators?

“Will the organisers of this trip hold a question and answer session with the locals who protest against incinerators?” ask Isaiah in a press statement.

He said that the Minister often claimed that the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill is operating above its capacity.

“KTI asks the Minister to prove that the Bukit Tagar Sanitary Landfill is only able to receive 2,500 tons of waste a day and that its operating life is nearly over.

“The fact is that Bukit Tagar can receive 4,000 t 5,000 tons of waste per day and is capable of operating up to year 2050,” he said.

He said that more than 10 residents associations around Kuala Lumpur have agreed to participate in the No Incinerator campaign.

“KTI also wants to announce that the Chairman of KTI, Isaiah, has made a police report on 11 January 2014 about the trash dumping incident on the MRR2 road which was left in heaps on 21 January 2013.

“KTI assumes that incident where the owner of Umpan Jaya Sdn Bhd ran away is a criminal case and must be subject to appropriate legal action,” he said.

Previously, KTI announced the Megawalk 2.0 which will be organised on 23 and 24 February; a walk from Kuala Lumpur to Putrajaya.
