Water Privatisation Ends, Selangorians Have the Opportunity to Receive Shares

SHAH ALAM, 13 Jan: Selangorians have the opportunity to own shares after the Federal Government and the Selangor Government reached an understanding on the issue of restructuring the water industry in the state.

The Coordinator for the Coalition Against Water Privatisation (CAWP), Charles Santiago, said that the developments on the water issue ended when the Federal Government cooperated to allow the restructuring of the water industry.

He said that the issue is considered as successfully resolved and the people have the opportunity to receive shares as previously announced by the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

“I do not see it as a failure, as reported by many parties. In my opinion, it is an understanding reached by both sides.

“Water privatisation can be considered as having ended, as understood by both parties.

“According to explanation from the Chief Minister recently, in general, we can say that this issues is successfully resolved,” he told Selangor Kini.

Previously, the Selangor Government wanted to restructure the water industry by acquiring water concessionaires because they failed to provide good service at a reasonable rate, despite high profits.

Charles said that understanding shows the State Government’s commitment in resolving the water issue advocated by Pakatan Rakyat in Selangor since 2008.

“It shows Abdul Khalid’s determination to the people of Selangor, as the shareholders of the new company which will be established later.

“This is good for Selangorians. I believe that the Selangor Government will deliver on its promise,” said the Member of Parliament for Klang.

He said that although they allowed for the Langat 2 Project to continue, the Selangor Government reserves the right to determine or object to the increase in water price after the project is completed.

“We know that the Langat 2 Project costs billions of ringgit. The question of who will be responsible in bearing the cost would depend on further discussions.

“However, the Selangor Government has the right to determine the price of water,” he said.

Charles said the use of Section 114 of the Water Services Industry Act (WSIA 2006) which was used following the stubbornness of the concessionaires to agree to the State Government’s offer to purchase the concession.

“The State Government made an offer to the four concessionaires, but they did not agree, causing Section 114 to be applied to make room for the acquisition,” he said.
