KLIA 2: Failure to obtain CCC is a waste of public funds, threat to public safety

SHAH ALAM, Feb 6th: The failure of UEMC-Bina Puri to obtain the Certificate of Completion and Compliance (CCC) for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA 2) joint-venture, will threaten the safety of the public and passengers using the facility.

This is very much possible should Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein insist on opening KLIA 2 on May 2nd this year.

Vice President of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), Tian Chua said such things could be avoided if the project tender had been transparent and fair, rather than through direct negotiations with cronies who have not competent.

7“This is the consequence if the tender of the project is dealt with the wrong way and in the end, not only are public funds sacrificed, but even the safety of the public is also be threatened if KLIA 2 is opened in a hurry without the approval of the safety authorities.”

“People are already bearing the losses as the project has been delayed several times, which of course involves an increase of the original cost of construction,” he told SelangorKini upon being contacted, today.

According to the original plan, KLIA 2 was expected to be completed in September 2011 but due to the several delays, the project incurred extra costs attributed to delayed construction work.

Today, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in its media statement reported that UEMC -Bina Puri failed to obtain the CCC because two-thirds of the main terminal building of the airport did not meet fire safety standards following an inspection carried out at the end of January.

Additionally, there are cracks in sewer pipes outside the terminal while the parts of the road and drainage are not suitable for use, which are some of the reasons why the CCC was not issued.

Hishamuddin stressed, however, that there will be no postponement of the opening of KLIA 2 which means that the airport will open on the 2nd of May as planned.
