Young Assemblymen perform well, draw the interest of youths to join politics

SHAH ALAM, 16 Dec: The organisation of the second Selangor Young State Legislative Assembly Members (Assemblymen) highlighted impressive performance with more experienced youth taking part in the debate session this time.

The Selangor State Assembly (DNS) Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, said that the programme does not only give a clearer picture about the on-goings in the Assembly, but participants are also exposed to the discipline of asking questions and using the set rules.

She said that although only five percent of the actual on-goings in the Assembly was highlighted, however it opened up the space for youth to pursue a political career if interested.

“We intend to organise this programme three times a year, where after the Assembly session, we will organise it to give the opportunity to the young people to take part.

“All participants will also be given the opportunity to meet with the Chief Minister, an in fact, all debates that take part in the Assembly will be used by the Exco involved, namely Amirudin Shari and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, to shape policies in the Selangor administration.

“This one way for us to hear the voice of the young people and use their voices to shape policies,” she said during a media conference at the Annex Hall today.

Hannah, who is also the Subang Jaya Assemblyman, said that there have been some changes and improvements in the programme this time, including participants being given additional time to debate and make preparations as it lasts for two days, starting yesterday.

She said that participants were also given motions to debate, which is regarding the implementation strategy for the Selangor Youth Policy for the morning session, while for the evening session focuses on the Free Education Scheme.

“They were also given the opportunity to meet the Selangor Government Backbencher’s Club (BBC) Assemblymen such as Saari Sungib, Yeo Bee Yin, Haniza Talha, R.Rajiv and Shahrum Mohd Sharif.

“Last year, they were given the opportunity to meet the Opposition Leader but unfortunately, this year he has resigned and we are waiting for a new nominee.

“It is also a network for them to join any political party if they want to pursue a career in this field,” she said.

For the programme this time, 123 applications were received from students who are Selangor children studying at institutions of higher learning from within and outside the country.
