Local authorities urged to provide free and disabled-friendly buses

SHAH ALAM, 24 Mar: All local authorities have been proposed to provide free and disabled-friendly bus services, particularly in urban areas including Shah Alam, Subang Jaya and Klang.

The Exco for Investment, Industry, Commerce and Transport, Datuk Teng Chang Khim, said that every year the Klang Valley experiences an increase in residents, thus causing the increase of transportation.

“We emulate the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) which provides free bus services to the residents of Petaling Jaya to facilitate the people.

“Hopefully this proactive approach will be continued and emulated by other local authorities,” he said after launching the urban Transportation Towards Sustainable City seminar and workshop at the Banquet Hall, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

Teng said that the free bus service, particularly in urban areas, should be provided with 12 to 15 buses.

“But it depends on the expenditure capability of each local authority. In MBPJ, 10 buses are provided for this service,” he said.

He said for people of the state, rapid municipal development along with the high population growth requires holistic and systematic transportation system development and a diverse network of transportation.
