RM2.81 million to improve women’s skill levels in 56 DUNs

SHAH ALAM, 23 Mar: The Women’s Empowerment Centre’s (PWB) development and empowerment programme with an allocation of RM2.81 million is able to make women more competitive and successful in their careers and at home.

The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women’s Affairs and Family, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that in the Selangor Government Budget 2015 session, special attention was given to improving the programme, which is being conducted at all 56 State Legislative Assemblies (DUNs).

“It is to produce more female leaders at the grassroots level and to improve family income through products produced by each PWB.

“The focus of empowerment in PWB is from the aspect of understanding gender, leadership, health and family safety,” she said during the opening speech of Selangor’s Women’s Day and the launching of the Selangor Orchid Fashion Festival 2015 (Orked) yesterday.

Daroyah said that the theme of Selangor’s Women’s Day this time is Respect Women – #MakeItHappen which shows the commitment of the state government under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali who is gender sensitive and attentive to the needs of women.

She said that the state government is aware that women play the main role in contributing to the state’s sustainable development and shapes the society’s culture.

“Malaysia is still has a long way in correcting the position and status of women in this country in terms of economic empowerment and political participation.

“The state government is always ready to work with all parties for the success of agenda to uphold women in Malaysia,” she said.

In the Global Gender Gap Index 2014, it was reported by the World Economic Forum that Malaysia is ranked 107 out of 142 countries, lower than Singapore (59), Vietnam (76) and Indonesia (97).
