Dengue cases on the rise until the year’s end

SHAH ALAM, 29 June: Dengue cases nationwide continues to show an increase from 1,400 cases a week in April to an average of 2,200 cases for the same period this month.

The Malaysian Director General of Health, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that he expects an upward trend in dengue cases to continue until the end of this year.

He said that the assumption is based on the serotype shift that happened in April and according to the cyclical pattern last year.

“The cumulative number of dengue cases from January to June 20 is 53,823 compared to 40,208 reported for 2014, which shows an increase of 34 percent (13,615 cases).

“Meanwhile, there were 158 deaths reported compared to 78 deaths during the same period in 2014, an increase of 8- deaths (103%),” he said.
