Ministry Should Ensure Sharia Police is Not for Political Reasons

SHAH ALAM, 13 Dec: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) needs to clarify and prove that the proposal to establish the ‘sharia police’ is not politically motivated.

The Central PAS Leader, Khalid Samad, said that MOHA has abused their power and the people money if the establishment is more politically motivated.

He said that MOHA should also clarify the real purpose of the establishment of the sharia police team, as well as how the team will act in handling cases.

“If it is detailed, they should clarify the real reason and how the sharia police will act.

“But if it is just to satisfy Barisan Nasional’s (BN) political interests of wanting to show that PAS’s cause if no longer relevant, then it is a misuse of power and the people’s money,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini today.

Yesterday, the Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Zahid Hamid, said that he is studying the proposal to set up a special police team to combat the spread of heresy and Shiite in this country.

The proposal, among others, will enable the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to house officers and members at the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM) as part of the enforcement team.

The establishment of the sharia police team was proposed after the MOHA ‘supposedly’ revealed that the PAS Deputy President, Mohamad Sabu, is linked with Shiite teachings based on 10 evidences linking the number two of the party.

Khalid, however, said that many things go against the teachings of Islam, including those from BN leaders themselves.

“Therefore, they should look into it. Let this reason not be the cause of why many PAS leaders are detained on such accusations. Do not practice wastage on BN’s actions because it is not right if it is politically motivated,” he said.
