SHAH ALAM, 24 Dec: The latest study by the University of Malays Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMCEDEL) found that 61 percent of respondents do not agree with the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) which will begin on 1 April 2015 at a rate of 6 percent.
The study, titled ‘Political Research Six Months After the 13th General Election’ also found that 79 percent of respondents believe that corruption and abuse of power are on the rise in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, 46 percent of respondents agree that the leadership of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, has been affected for failing to win a two-thirds majority in the 13th General Election (GE13).
Touching on current issues, the increase of oil received the most attention from respondents at 42 percent, followed by the increase of goods (34 percent) and the increase in electricity and water tariffs (24 percent).
The study involved 1,676 respondents from Peninsular Malaysia and took place recently, from 6 to 8 December.
The study took into consideration the sample of respondents were from various backgrounds and done according to composition of race, age, gender, area, occupation, household income and voting status.
