MACC Challenged to Reveal Provision List in Need of Improvement at Parliament

January 7th, SHAH ALAM: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was challenged to disclose its provisions deemed to be in need of improvement at Parliament so that body does not provide superficial reasons especially in the investigation of high-profile cases involving corruption.

Bukit Katil Member of Parliament Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin said that the MACC needs to stop providing baseless reasons which states that the body does not have the authority to investigate the controversial purchase of a luxury condominium worth RM110 million belonging to the son of Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor in New York.

“I want to challenge the MACC to reveal in detail to the Members of Parliament, the provisions they (MACC) feel need to be boosted so that the MACC can conduct investigations thoroughly in confidence of the provisions allocated to them.

“It is unreasonable for MACC to say that they are unable to investigate because the assets needed are outside their budget. If that is true, then the people practicing massive corruption will be free to do as they please,” he said upon being contacted by SelangorKini here, today.

Initially, MACC said that the body was unable to investigate the purchase of a condominium in New York by Riza Shahriz as there are no laws stipulating that they should investigate individuals who purchase assets beyond their immediate financial means.

MACC also stated that it had proposed that these provisions be included in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, but Putrajaya has yet to present it in Parliament.

At the same time, Shamsul said that it is unreasonable for MACC to continue to exist and needs to be shut down immediately as it is only wasting taxpayers’ money with useless reasons every time they are asked to investigate huge corruption cases.

“This reduces MACC to a body for mere ‘show’ for the people because efforts to nab the small-fry but is unable to muster the will to completely annihilate corruption involving hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Therefore, the Commission should not be allowed to exist in Malaysia and should be shut down for wasting taxpayers’ money by giving unacceptable justifications,” he said.

He added that he is confident there is an Act under the MACC Act which allows it to investigate anyone and this matter needs to be made clear in detail to the public.
