Rafizi: Marry before 2015, Avoid Paying Higher Wedding Expenses due to the GST

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Jan: Youth who are ready to build a family are encouraged to marry before April 2015 to avoid from incurring the high cost of a wedding feast when the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is implemented.

The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Strategy Director, Rafizi Ramli, said that the increased expenditure is expected to happen because all transactions involving goods and services are subject to the GST, including the cost of providing food or catering, hall rental, renting gazebo umbrellas and photographer services.

“If a catering business does not register its company to charge the GST to customers, this will cause them to bear the charges imposed by suppliers and they cannot claim GST credits from the government. So catering companies will register as well,” he said.

Rafizi, who is also a chartered accountant and has extensive experience in tax affairs, said this at the Understand GST, Reject GST forum which was held at the Petaling Jaya City Council Civic Hall last night.

He said that if catering businesses refuse to register their company, they will increase prices to cover the GST charges imposed by their suppliers.

The same will happen for hall or gazebo umbrella rental services, makeup artists, clothing preparation, photographers and other preparations.

“If the catering company is registered with the GST but does not charge their clients the GST, the business owners can be fined or jailed,” he said.
