The participants were taken from a list of eligible poor people through village chiefs and community leaders from the Bukit Malawati DUN, particularly for the Chinese.

The Jom Shopping programme has become a new space for senior citizens and the poor to meet and greet, and most of these senior citizens expressed their happiness.

“I am very grateful to the Selangor State Government for celebrating the Chinese New Year with them by the giving of these shopping vouchers. Although our children are able to provide for our expenses, but it is different when the state gives it to us,” said Ong Fu Chan, 67.

The Bukit Malawati DUN Coordinator, S.manikavasagam, was happy that space was provided for participants to meet and be photographed, showing their joy in celebrating the Chinese New Year this year.

He also believed that this opportunity allows him to be close with senior citizens and the poor and reduces racial disparities.

Although the RM100 contributed by the State Government is able to only lessen the burdens of senior citizens and the poor a little, other advantages could have come from it.

He also took the opportunity to wish Happy Chinese New Year to all Chinese and hopes that everyone will take the agile spirit of the horse and be prepared to make changes.
