SHAH ALAM, 5 Feb: Efforts to empower the income of single mothers and the poor through the ‘Contract for Service’ programme to clean public toilets by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has been praised by the Executive Councillor in charge of Local Government, Studies and Research, Datuk Teng Chang Kim.
Chang Kim said that the approach taken by MBPJ in solving sanitation problems in the region should be emulated by other Local Authorities (LA).
“However, it is up to the respective LAs in determining the most appropriate method to be implemented.
“This is because, what was successfully undertaken by MBPJ will not necessarily work for other LAs. However, these efforts need to be studied to find out whether it can be emulated or of there are better ways,” he said when contacted by Selangor Kini yesterday.
Previously, the cleaning of public toilets under the supervision of MBPJ was given to contractors. However, the practice was discontinued because the quality of service provided was not satisfactory.
The vacancy of the role has been transferred to single mothers and the poor through the ‘Contract for Service’ with a salary of RM1,500 per month.
“This is a noble effort and should be lauded. It is a two-pronged approach when MBPJ will not only solve the problem of public toilet sanitation, but single mothers and the poor also have job opportunities,” he said.
