Malaysian Press Freedom Index at its Worst Since 2002

SHAH ALAM, 12 Feb: Malaysia’s ranking continues to plunge to its worst level in the Press Freedom Index 2013 which was issued by Reporters Without Borders (RWB), or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), based in Paris.

Malaysia is now ranked 147 out of 180 countries; two places down compared to the previous year (145).

3.2

The ranking is the worst since 2002, when Malaysia ranked 110, 2003 (104), 2004 (122), 2005 (113), 2006 (92), 2007 (124), 2008 (131) and 2010 (141).

The ranking puts Malaysia below other countries such as Bangladesh (146), Myanmar (145) and Cambodia (144), Israel (112), Mongolia (98) and Ivory Coast (96).

Ranked from the top is Finland (1), Netherlands (2) and Norway (3). Meanwhile the last three ranked are Turkmenistan (177), North Korea (178) and Eritrea (179).
