KUALA LUMPUR, 2 Feb: The Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas) admits to going against outcome of discussions with the Selangor Government to reduce the discharge of raw water when the water level in the dam receded.
The Syabas Executive Director, V Subramaniam, said that this involved 600 million litres of water a day from four Sungai Selangor dams and a reduction in the production of 500 million litres a day of treated water at five water treatment plants.
At a press conference here today, he said that the results of discussions on 21 February was done following the decrease in dam levels, however Syabas did not comply with it.
“Syabas could not execute the order without receiving approval from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN),” he said.
He reasoned that only SPAN has the authority to decide and approve such plans according to the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (WSIA 2006).
In fact, Subramaniam said that the Syabas Scheduled Water Distribution Plan will only be effective on 27 February, although the water scheduling began today, and gave the excuse that the two-day period to do so is too short.
Instead, he was fonder of pointing his finger at the Selangor Government for refusing to implement many development and improvement projects for the water supply capacity.
He also brought up SPAN’s decision to not approve the capital expenditure (CAPEX) programme to improve and upgrade the water supply distribution system, including efforts to reduce the rate of non-revenue water (NRW) losses.
