KUALA LUMPUR, 25 Feb: The Selangor Water Supply Company (Syabas) admits not having a support plan to solve the ammonia contamination problem at Sungai Langat, which has caused disruptions in water supply in some areas.
Instead, the Syabas Executive Director (Technical Development), V Subramaniam, said that the problem will be solved naturally when it rains heavily.
He reasoned that all rivers have ammonia, but the dry weather has caused this contamination to be more serious.
“It will be solved depending on weather conditions. If it rains, ammonia can be reduced and plants can operate again to provide water,” he said in a press conference at the Syabas headquarters today.
Subramaniam also admitted that Syabas has no planning to solve the water crisis if it continues after March, and instead has handed the problem to the National Water Services Commission (SPAN).
“It is subject to the weather and based on the decision by the State Government and SPAN. We have to look at the extent of this persisting drought. Syabas has no back-up plan,” he said.
