SPAN: Water Rationing Period in Johor Extended Till End of March

CYBERJAYA, 28 Feb: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) will extend the water rationing period in Johor till the end of March, as river levels continue to recede.

Previously, SAJ Holdings (SAJH) requested from scheduled water distribution to be implemented in the Kluang district, starting from 18 February, after the Sungai Sembrong Kiri’s level to supply raw water to the Sembrong Timur Water Treatment Plant (WTP) dipped to a critical level.

The Chairman of SPAN, Datuk Ismail Kasim, said that up to yesterday, they found that the Sembrong Timur WTP could only produce 7.6 million litres per day (MLD) compared to the normal production of 31 MLD.

In relation to this, he said that each zone will receive water for two days, followed by water rationing for two days.

“This new Scheduled Distribution of Water will be implemented on 1 March 2014.

“Additionally, SPAN also informed that the level at Sungai Kahang, which supplies raw water to the Sungai Kahang WTP has receded to the alert level,” he said in a press conference at the SPAN headquarters.

Ismail said for Negeri Sembilan, the Negeri Sembilan Water Company (SAINS) will review the rationing for the district of Tamping and Rembau if the situation becomes more critical.

“SAINS is taking short and long term solutions to improve water supply in the district of Seremben by channeling 14 MLD of water supply from the other WTPs, like what is being done from other plants, the Sungai Linggi WTP in Mambau and Sendayan,” he said.
