Water MoU: CM Takes a Political Risk, Sets Aside His Ego in the Interests of the People

SHAH ALAM, 5 Mar: The water Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Selangor Government and the Federal Government is a good start for the people which should be celebrated, not questioned.

The Executive Director of the Community Communications Centre (Komas), Tan Jo Hann, said that the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, set aside a huge political risk in the interests of the people.

He believes for Khalid, as an experienced leader with an excellent track record, the decision will surely benefit the people.

“We cannot avoid cooperating with the Federal Government, the same goes for the construction of highways, roads, education and so on. It cannot be done alone.

“But we have to be careful and ensure that everything is done transparently and with integrity. In matters like this, I am certain that the Chief Minister is more discerning and careful,” he told Selangor Kini.

KOMAS is a human rights organisation established in 1993 to support marginalised communities.

Prior to this, Selangor signed an MoU with the Federal Government which allows for the acquisition of the four water concessionaires, thus allowing the water industry restructuring.

Tan said that all governments, whether state or federal, should take a lesson from this joint venture in the interests of the people.

“In some cases, we have to put aside our egos in the political arena because if we insist, the people become victims.

“But at the same time, we should strongly hold to our policies and principles, which is the champion the people’s rights and welfare,” he said.
