DNS Speaker: Wan Azizah to be Sworn In on 7 April

KAJANG, 24 Mar: The President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, will be sworn in as the Kajang Assemblywoman on 7 April.

This was announced by the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) Speaker, Hannah Yeoh, during a press conference after it was announced that Dr Wan Azizah won in the Kajang State Legislative Assembly (DUN) by-election last night.

“The next step is for Wan Azizah is to be sworn in as the new Kajang Assemblywoman on 7 April. With this victory, this would mean that there would be even more Assemblywomen in the DNS at 15 people,” she said in a press conference at the Ballot Counting Centre at the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) Sports Complex last night.

Dr Wan Azizah will be replacing Lee Chin Cheh who resigned from his post to make way for the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to contest in the constituency, thus ensuring the success of what is called the Kajang Move on 27 January.

However, Anwar’s desire was blocked by the decision of the Court of Appeal, which decided that he was guilty in the sodomy case, thus resulting in PKR having to change their strategy by replacing Dr Wan Azizah as the candidate.

Although Dr Wan Azizah is considered as the number two candidate for the Kajang constituency seat, however her ability to solve the people’s issues are not doubted as she previously served as a Member of Parliament for over two terms, and was appointed as the Opposition leader from 1999 to 2004.

Dr Wan Azizah won with a majority of 5,379 votes after receiving 16,741 votes compared to her challenger, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, from Barisan Nasional (BN), who received 11,362 votes.

The results also show the percentage of votes obtained by PKR increasing from 6.8 percent in the 13th General Election to 59.7 percent in the by-election this time.
