DAP: Death Sentence for 529 Morsi Supporters Cruel, Ridiculous

SHAH ALAM, 26 Mar: DAP opposes and condemns the inhumane actions of the Egyptian court that sentenced over 500 supporters of the former President, Dr Mohamed Morse, to death.

The DAP Election Strategist, Dr Ong Kian Ming, said that the largest mass execution in history is not only cruel but ridiculous.

He said that the sentence was passed in a hurry during a very biased trial session.

“It is nonsense when a punishment of such magnitude can be passed only after a mass trial for two days in connection to the death of one policeman.

“The defence also reportedly was not given access to the evidence, in fact the defendant and their lawyers were also not allowed to be present in court when the sentence was passed,” he said in a statement.

On 24 March, a court in Minya, Kaherah, sentenced 529 Morsi supporters, also members of Muslim Brotherhood, to death after only two sessions of the trial was held.

The sentence was also reported to have in a state when the defence counsel complained that they were not given the opportunity to present their arguments.

In relation to that, Kian Ming, who is also the Member of Parliament for Serdang, said that the latest developments in Egypt seem to be giving a sign that the Arabic country will return to the days of the dictatorship of Hosni Mubarak.

“I urge the Federal Government to condemn the move by the Egyptian government and the country’s court system that oppresses its own people,” he said.
