CM: Team of Experts Established to Review Re-delineation of Electoral Constituencies

SHAH ALAM, 9 Apr: A committee consisting of a team of experts has been established to review the re-delineation of electoral constituencies for the Selangor State Legislative Assembly.

The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the team will also provide advice to the economic unit as the secretariat for determining the necessary matters in the coming General Election, hence coordinating the democracy requirements of the country.

He said that a proposal to follow international standards of ‘one person one vote’ will also be discussed; however no final decision has been made by the State Government.

“It is the responsibility of the Election Commission (EC) or the Parliament to conduct this re-delineation.

“Every 10 years this process is carried out, however in September 2013, the State Government decided to understand this issue.

“It was done because the population has increased, therefore there is a need to coordinate this,” he said.

Abdul Khalid said this when answering questions or suggestions for Selangor in the process of re-delineation of electoral constituencies if the EC brings up the re-delineation from Haniza Talha (PKR-Taman Medan).

Abdul Khalid said that the committee is an independent body from government constraints so that they are able to view it from all perspectives.

“This is not covered by the state alone, but for the whole country, the committee will continue to do their work.

“If Assemblymen decide to engage in discussions, I have no objection,” he said.
