PKR President: Anwar Remains Azizah’s Opponent

KUALA LUMPUR, 12 Apr: The Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, still remains and confirms to be running for the position of party President in the election at the end of the month.

The Director of the Central Election Committee (JPP), Datuk Johari Abdul, said that there has not been any application to withdraw from Anwar since the deadline to do so ended on 10 April.

“Only one seat has been allocated for the position of President and so far, there are still two contending people.

“They are, the number one candidate, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and the number two candidate, Anwar Ibrahim,” he said in a press conference yesterday.

In the PKR early nomination, which was held on 29 March, Anwar nominated himself to contest for the position of President and will be going against the incumbent, Wan Azizah.

However, Johari said that each contending candidate still has the opportunity to withdraw despite the period to do so has ended.

“But candidates who withdraw after 10 April is not eligible to receive a refund of their deposit. The lateness in withdrawing will result in their name and photo to still appear in the candidate information sheet.

“However, if a member elects a candidate who has withdrew, the vote is considered as damaged,” he said.

Anwar’s candidacy for the position will be seen as a difficult path due to being convicted in a defamation case against him.

Under Section 9A (1)(b) of the Societies Act 1966, someone cannot become or hold position in a registered establishment if convicted of any offence or fined not less than RM2,000, or a minimum sentence of one year.
