Anwar: “Give Us More Time to Discuss the Issue of Hudud”

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 Apr: The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has pleaded for more time to allow Pakatan Rakyat to discuss PAS’s plan to implement the Hudud law in Kelantan, amid protests from DAP, one of the coalition’s partners.

He said that agreement between the three PR component parties, including Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), is very important with regards to the matter.

“Give us more time for discourse (Hudud).” he said in a press conference at the PKR Headquarters today.

Anwar said that Hudud is not part of PR’s agenda, as agreed in the coalition agreement between the three parties.

“The agreement signed on 28 September 2011, stresses on the Federal Constitution, mutual policies and the Orange Book.

“The Syariah Criminal Enactment for Kelantan (1993) and the Terengganu (2003) happened before the establishment of PR. PKR and PAS respects the DAP’s different stand on this matter,” he said.

Anwar said that the implementation of the Hudud law requires an institution that is geared in that direction.

“We cannot imagine a situation when we try to implement something that is considered important to faith, but there is no institution for it,” he said.

The Hudud issue came back when Kelantan insisted to implement the Kelantan Syariah Enactment II, which was announced its Chief Minister, Datuk Ahmad Yackob.

However, DAP rejected the implementation of the Hudud law, which is seen to be in conflict with the Federal Constitution and national interests in PR.
