Come Down to KL on May 1, Oppose GST

SHAH ALAM, 30 Apr: The people have been urged to go down to Dataran Merdeka to oppose the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), abuse of power involving judges and courts, as well as corruption by Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN).

The President of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said that PKR also expressed commitment with PAS and DAP in Pakatan Rakyat (PR), and all justice-loving people to join in the Peoples Action Assembly on May 1.

“We will go down together to defend the people, assemble peacefully in the high spirit of democracy,” she said.

The May 1 assembly will also be joined by dozens of NGOs that will march and join at Dataran Merdeka from KLCC, Sogo, the National Mosque, Brickfields and Dataran Maybank, Pudu. The groups will leave all locations at 2pm.

“PKR believes that the existence of various enforcement of tax, proposed by the BN government, is a big matter that has profound impact on the people.

“BN should not punish the people when they fail to overcome weaknesses in the government, particularly on basic issues like leakage of funds and failure of good governance,” she said in a press statement.

Wan Azizah said, as affirmed by the PKR de facto leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, that Pakatan Rakyat has risen up to object the GST, TPPA, widespread corruption, leakages and embezzlement done by the BN Government because these things will burden the people.

“PKR insists, as long as there is no significant change in the gap between the rich and the poor, PKR will vigorously oppose the GST.

“This is because as long as high inflation persists, the implementation of the GST in the near future is expected to increase the burden of living,” he said.

Meanwhile, the organisers of the demonstration against the goods and services tax (GST) on May 1 have decided to not make Dataran Merdeka the last location of the assembly.

They plan to gather in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building at Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur.

The PAS Deputy President, Mohamad Sabu, said that based on a meeting yesterday with the Dang Wangi District Police Chief, Zainuddin Ahmad, the police will cooperate by closing Jalan Raja during the rally.
