3 UM Student Leaders Receive Show-Cause Letter

SHAH ALAM, 9 May: Three leaders of the University of Malaya (UM) Student Representative Council have been given a show-cause letter for holding a protest on campus during visit of U.S. President, Barack Obama.

Quoting Malaysia Kini, these students are the Vice President of the Student Representative Council, Lee Jin Yang; the Secretary, Fahmi Zainol and Deputy Secretary, Leong Yu Sheng.

The show-cause letter was issued by the UM Student Affairs Department through an e-mail yesterday (May 8).

The students held a brief protest on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and support towards the people of Egypt when Obama visited UM in a meeting session with participants of the Young Southeast Asian Leadership Initiative on April 27.

“We received a letter claiming that we violated and jeopardised the reputation of the university by displaying placards written ‘No TPPA’ and logos regarding the case in Egypt,” said Leong.

Leong said that they are being given seven days from the date of the letter to reply the Student Affairs Department and they will hold a press conference regarding the issue at 3 pm today.
