Government urged to grant citizenship to 9,327 children

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 June: The Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has been urged to immediately approve the citizenship of children who have not been granted citizenship despite their parents being Malaysians.

The Member of Parliament for Pandan, Rafizi Ramli, said that through answers given by the ministry, 9,372 children have still not been granted citizenship in this country.

“Through answers given last Thursday, the ministry said that 9,372 children born in Malaysia, with one whose parents are citizens of the country, have not been granted citizenship status.

“This is very sad because the government itself denies citizenship rights to these children and problems will rise when they want to begin schooling,” he said during a press conference in Parliament, Kuala Lumpur, quoted from The Malaysian Insider.

He said in the written reply given by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA), it also states that the provisions under the Constitution, Section 15 (2), Article 18, allows for the children of a citizen of Malaysia to be granted citizenship.
