SHAH ALAM, 14 July: The state athletes of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) who failed to get a place at institutes of higher learning will be given the opportunity to continue their studies at institutes under the administration of Selangor.
The Chief Minister, Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, said that the opportunity is aimed to appreciate the efforts of athletes who have given a good reputation to the state through participation in sports.
He said that it is hoped that athletes who are interested will use the opportunity wisely.
“The State Government has agreed to allow athletes, who failed to continue their education, to enter institutions in Selangor like at the University of Selangor (UNISEL) and the Selangor Islamic University College (KUIS).
“We are giving this opportunity because we appreciate their efforts over the years where they have given Selangor a good reputation in sports,” he said during his speech when presenting SUKMA incentives at the Silver Jubilee Hall yesterday.
At the same time, Abdul Khalid informed that the State Government will allocate an appropriate amount in state reserves for aim of development in the next SUKMA.
He said that this involved the provision of equipment and facilities for athletes in efforts to improve the state’s sport infrastructure.
“We will try to discuss an appropriate amount. Therefore, the State Government hopes that all involved will be ready to face the sporting event next year,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Executive Councillor in charge of Youth and Sports, Dr Yunus Hairi, said that provisions for the development of youth has been approved so that those involved will participate in sports activities.
He said that the State Government is working with the Putra University, Malaysia (UPM), Faculty of Social Science to begin training every weekend.
