SHAH ALAM, 21 Aug: The project to replace the Pulau Ketam subsea pipeline is expected to be completed at the end of the year, says Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA), Datuk Seri Dr Mazimus Ongkili.
The project costing RM38 million will involve the installation of a new 5.6 kilometre pipe with a part of the pipeline passing through the Straits of Klang.
“It is hoped that the new pipe will overcome the water supply disruptions that frequently happen at Pulau Ketam and it is estimated to affect 1,200 user accounts,” he said, quoting a report by Bernama.
Previously, Pulau Ketam and Sungai Lima often experienced water supply disruptions due to a leak in the subsea pipeline caused by shipping activities as well as works to deepen the Straits of Klang carried out by the port.
Since June 21, the whole of Pulau Ketam and Sungai Lima experienced an unscheduled water outage due to a burst subsea pipe on the 18 kilometre pipeline.
However, the reparation works and the connection pipe was successfully completed on July 11, before it was damaged in a different area.
At least 1,184 user accounts involving 5,921 consumers in the two areas experienced an outage of clean water supply for almost a month when the 450 millimetre wide High Density Polyethlene (HDPE) pipe was damaged.
Consequently, the daily lives and livelihoods of the fisheries, food and hotel sectors operated by the residents were badly affected.
