Increase monitoring of Sungai Langat to avoid impairment of water resources

SHAH ALAM, 10 Sept: The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS), the Department of Environment (DOE) and the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) should strengthen monitoring and inspection of river pollution along Sungai Langat.

It is because there are some factories suspected of polluting the river causing contamination of raw water.

The Assemblyman for Balakong, Ng Tien Chee, said that the Hulu Langat Region Syabas has been informed that the ammonia level in the raw water at the intake point of Sungain Langat has reached 3.50 ppm and 1.52 ppm for treated water.

The Batu 11 Cheras Water Treatment Plant was forced to stop their operations at 11.30 am on September 9 as a result of raw water contamination at Sungai Langat.

“The Batu 11 Cheras WTP operators should explain to everyone about the actions being taken.

“They need to address this problem earlier and it should not repeat because this issue is not a new issue,” he said in a press statement.

He called on all parties concerned to come up with a comprehensive plan to address this problem so that the daily activities of water consumers will not be affected by the closure of the WTP.

“The closure of this WTP has resulted in residential areas along Jalan Balakong, from Pekan Batu 11 Cheras to Taman Impian Ehsan and Kampung Baru Balakong to face unscheduled water supply disruption.

“The restoration period is subject to the reduction in the ammonia levels,” he said.
