Local Government portfolio applies three key values in administration

SHAH ALAM, 2 Oct: The Committee for Local Government, Legalising Illegal Factories and New Village Development has highlighted three key values in its administration to ensure that the people in this state continue to receive the best services from the state government.

Among the values are public participation and democracy, back to basics and the development of sustainable cities.

However, its Executive Councillor, Ean Yong Hian Wah, said that it is too early for his to outline a new policy under the portfolio which he newly holds. He will however consult with the Chief Minister, Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders and people at the grassroots level on the matter.

“I want to thank the Chief Minister, Mohamed Azmin Ali, who entrusted the local government portfolio to me.

“I am pleased with this new responsibility and I am aware that the expectations of the public on the performance of local governments,” he said in a statement.

Commenting on the three values, he said that the state government should promote public participation, consultation and volunteers in the formulation of administrative policies.

He said that the local authorities in this state should be more open to public participation in budgeting policy formulation and implementation.

“In the long-term, it remains our political commitment to democratise local councils and go back to basics as expected by the people in the implementation of responsibilities towards them.

“The local council’s mission is become cleaner, greener and to create more secure cities.

“All policy ideas developed by local authorities should take into account a long-term view of at least 20 years, environmental sustainability and financial sustainability,” he said.
