Representatives of the people should not focus on big issues for popularity, neglect small issues

PETALING JAYA, 21 Oct: Representatives of the people have been advised to not focus on big issues to receive wide media coverage for the sake of chasing popularity, but they have to be concerned about ‘small issues’ in their respective areas.

Private teacher, Punitha Pancha, 31, said one of the small issues meant includes the issue of illegal advertising that may have a negative impact on the public.

“For me, this will certainly impair views and it is more dangerous because we cannot trust the real purpose of the advertisers involved.

“MPs should not overlook and just focus on big issues to receive media coverage and only increase their popularity to a point that they forget to look at small issues like this,” she told Selangor Kini.

Punitha also urged other MPs to emulate the Assemblyman for Bukit Gasing, R Rajiv, who carries out on-going efforts to curb illegal advertising in the area he is in charge of.

Sales advisor Ady Izmar, 34, said that illegal advertising does not only tarnish the image of the country in the eyes of foreign tourists, but the eyesore also endangers motorists.

“I think that it troubles the public, and it is an eyesore to be seen and gives a negative connotation on the image of the country in the eyes of foreign tourists.

“They should abide with the rules set because it is hard to see the name of roads when looking for a place when we are already there but we are going round and round to find the destination,” he said.

Danny, 37, said that some advertising that is up do not follow the size and endangers the people who pass through the area.

“For me, illegal advertising is definitely an eyesore, hurts the heart and is also endangering because drivers may lose focus while driving. They also put up large sized and heavy advertisement that may cause unwanted incidents like the incident in Pasir Gudang, Johor, recently,” he said.

Sales advisor, Fitri Husin, 25, said that local authorities should take decisive action to eradicate the increasing illegal advertising.

“People who are not familiar with the roads could get lost because the road names cannot be seen. Therefore, I feel that local authorities should take decisive action compared to just calling the phone number previously which was not very effective. Local authorities need to think of other ways,” she said.
