KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Nov: The fate of the elderly and residents of Kampung Chubadak will continue to be fought for by students so that they receive the justice deserved.
The University of Malaya Muslim Students’ Society (PMIUM) takes the issue of the demolishing of the residents’ homes in the village as a cruel act by the authorities and the developer.
Its President, Khairol Najib Hashim, said that with the combined strength with several student organisations and other parties, PMIUM is determined for the village residents to be defended.
He said that the incident that happened to Abdul Halim Hamid, 76, and his wife, Wahidah Mat Salleh, 72, received the attention of students who continue to support and build their home despite it being demolished since June.
“This is the first fight, then the home of Halim and Wahidah. There are around 50 other homes we will fight for. We will fight until we win,” he said during the “Opah Wahidah Enters University” programme at the University of Malaya last night.
Khairol Najib said that after discussions with the developer, Sentul Murni Sdn Bhd, which was also attended by the Member of Parliament for Batu, Tian Chua, several agreements were reached to solve Halim and Wahidah’s case.
He said that among the demands agreed upon was that the developer will pay appropriate compensation, give them a temporary home with the cost of rent while waiting for their home to be completed, and all legal costs will be borne by the developer.
“Also agreed upon was that the moving period would be on November 15 and no demolition will be done during that time,” he said while explaining that students will continue to monitor this matter.
