DAP wants PR to fulfil promise of Deputy Speaker position

SHAH ALAM, 1 Dec: DAP demanded Pakatan Rakyat to pass the Selangor State Assembly (DNS) Deputy Speaker position to DAP like they promised, said the Skinchan Assemblyman, Ng Suee Lim.

Failing to obtain sufficient votes in the DNS Deputy Speaker election recently, Suee Lim said that DAP hands over the solution of the issue to the Selangor DAP Chairman, Tony Pua, to urge for the enactment to be changed so that a 2nd Deputy Speaker position can be established to be submitted to DAP.

“At the end of the Chief Minister crisis, the Pakatan Leadership Council agreed to appoint another Deputy Speaker,” said Suee Lim when met by reporters at the DNS foyer today.

DAP nominated Ng Suee Lim for the position last week, but the position was won by Shafie Ngah (PAS-Bangi), with 28 votes, while Suee Lim received 14 votes.

The DNS Speaker seat is occupied by the Subang Jaya Assemblyman, Hannah Yeoh, from DAP.

Elaborating, Suee Lim however said that the new agreement among Pakatan Rakyat component parties must be achieved first.

“The enactment just needs to be changed. That is also if an agreement regarding it can be reached among Pakatan Rakyat component parties.

“Currently, we have not had any meetings. The next (meeting) will be after the DNS session ends,” he said.

The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker are positions given to individuals who chair the legislative assembly.

The official duties of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker is to defuse debates, make decisions regarding assembly procedures, announce voting results, determine which elected representative may speak when the assembly is in session and impose discipline on elected representatives who violate assembly procedures.

According to standard practice, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected by representatives of the people via votes.
