CM: Civil servants must spend prudently, challenge in facing a tough economy

KUALA SELANGOR, 19 Dec: The Chief Minister of Selangor, Mohamed Azmin Ali, asked for the full involvement of civil servants in Selangor to practice the culture of prudence in spending in preparation of facing tough economic challenges.

The call was made in reference to several economic indicators, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) report which predicts that the world economy will only grow at a rate of 3.8 percent only in 2015.

He said that the 2015 budget will be more challenging to be realised in such an economic climate if the practice of prudence in spending cannot be practiced.

“Do not take the 2015 economy lightly. We must be prepared to face and that is why I am asking for us to practice the culture of prudence.

“The state government has set an example by cutting the allowances of the Chief Minister and the Exco. I also refuse to accept any gifts when I conduct fieldwork. All of this being a message asking us to save.

“This includes feasts; reduce the menu (items). Only two kinds of kuih would be enough for tea receptions,” he said when speaking at the Kuala Selangor District Civil Servants Morning Assembly today.

Also present was the State Government Secretary, Datuk Mohd Kushrin Munawi, the Selangor Exco members and the Kuala Selangor District Officer, Sulaiman Abd Rahman.

Prior to this, the country’s economic experts predicted that the country’s economy will be much lower than the projected global economy by the IMF.

“We also witnessed Japan recording a slowdown starting the third quarter this year with the country’s GDP fluctuating at a rate of 1.6 percent compared to the predicted growth at 2.2 percent,” he said.
