SHAH ALAM, 23 Feb: The Selangor Department of Environment (DOE) seized and shut down the operations of a factory involved in polluting the waters of Sungai Semenyih recently.
The Environment Exco, Elizabeth Wong, said that the action was taken after the DOE conducted an inspection on the factory.
“The contamination that happened at Sungai Semenyih last week was suspected to be caused by a factory according to the high acid content.
“The factory has been shut down and seized by the DOE and further investigation is being conducted by the department,” said Elizabeth in her message to Selangor Kini today.
Prior to this, the production of treated water at the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant was reduced starting February 15 following a decline in the quality of raw water where there were high acid levels due to manganese and ammonia content that exceeded the permissible limits.
This caused the water supply in Petaling Jaya to be affected for several days.
However, the water supply for 135,000 accounts in the area fully recovered on February 18.
