SHAH ALAM, 7 Mar: The implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), starting April 1, will also affect strata housing maintenance fees.
The Exco for Housing and Building Management, Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, said that residents will also be potentially affected by the GST because it would indirectly cause an increase.
“Although in terms of maintenance fees there is not GST, but JMB also appoint contractors to carry out cleaning, mechanical and technical work.
“We are worried that contractors that are affected by the GST will charge JMBs, subsequently affecting the residents,” he said.
Iskandar said that the organisation of the GST Implementation Premier Briefing particularly for Joint Management Bodies (JMBs) today does not mean that the state government supports the implementation of the GST.
He said that the briefing was the clarify matters confusing the residents regarding the maintenance fee issue for strata housing after the GST.
“This is because there is confusion and different information previously where the minister said that there will not be GST charges while other professional groups said that there will be the GST.
“So, we organised the briefing today not because the state government supports the GST but because we want to help residents in facing the GST,” he said.
He joined the briefing by two customs officials, together with JMB representatives across Selangor at the Silver Jubilee Hall today.
