Nurul Izzah arrested over speech in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 Mar: The Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, Nurul Izzah Anwar, was arrested by the police in relation to the speech she made last Tuesday in Parliament.

“ASP Muniandy informed that I was being arrested under the direction of Dt Azam, the D5 Assistant Director General of Bukit Aman,” wrote Izzah on Twitter informing about the arrest.

The PKR Communications Director, Fahmi Fadzil, said that Nurul Izzah was arrested under the Sedition Act.

“Nurul Izzah was detained under Section 4 (1) of the Sedition Act at 3.30 pm at the Dang Wangi Police Headquarters (IPD). She is being taken by the police to take her fingerprint and photograph,” wrote Fahmi on Twitter.

Today, Nurul Izzah went with activist Safwan Anang to the IPD to give her clarification on her involvement in the recent #KitaLawan assembly.

Prior to that, she informed that she was given a notice by the police in relation to Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and also the Sedition Act 1948.

Nurul Izzah, during the debate session in Parliament, quoted a speech by the Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim which is said to dispute the country’s judiciary system.

So far, six people have been arrested in relation to the case. These people are activist Adam Adli, DAP Youth Chief Teo Kok Seong, PKR Youth Chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Kalana Jaya PKR Youth Chief Saifullah Zulkifli, PKR Vice President Rafizi Ramli and the PAS Youth Treasurer Mohd Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar.
