Increasing toll rates is cruel to the people

AMPANG, 15 June: The federal government which intends to raise toll rates when the people are being pressured by the uncertain economic conditions is cruel.

The PKR Deputy President, Mohamed Azmin Ali, said that the people are being pressured by the increase in cost of living due to the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) and the increase in fuel prices.

“It is not fair to burden the people when during the current tough economic condition.

“So, studies should be carried out to look into the need to continue the implementation of the toll, even more so should the toll rate be increase,” he said when met by Selangor Kini during the Ihya Ramadan Contribution Presentation Ceremony 2015 for Bukit Antarabangsa yesterday.

He was commenting on the information leak regarding the proposal to increase highway toll rates, which was stressed by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, that it has not yet been finalised by the cabinet.

Mohamed Azmin also reiterated his call to the federal government to review the highway operations concession.

“It is among our (PR) insistence that highways that impose tolls should be reviewed because a large part of highway operators obtain huge profits.

“With the large traffic volume and the long length of the concession period, they would certainly reap an extravagant profit,” said the Selangor Chief Minister.
