Use guppies to fight dengue

KAPAR, 8 Sept: The state government will implement a pilot project using guppies in the fight against dengue in the state.

The Exco for Health, Welfare, Women and Family Affairs, Dr Daroyah Alwi, said that the decision on the areas to implement the project will be decided later this month.

“In terms of biological control, we are examining efforts to combat by using guppies. So far, the method is good because the fishes eat mosquito larvae.

“However, it is rather difficult to implement, that is why we need time. Similarly with the breeding of Toxo mosquitoes, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is creating a laboratory.

“The two places we have implemented it so far has seen a reduction in dengue cases,” she told Selangor Kini.

According to statistics, as of August 8, 1,336 cases were recorded, bringing the cumulative total of cases to 41,223 cases this year.

While the cumulative death is at 93 cases.

“So far, dengue cases, including fatalities, remain a concern. Statistics seem to show no solution. Therefore, we are trying to implement a variety of methods, including fogging,” she said.
