Food waste to electricity innovation to generate income

SUBANG JAYA, 6 Oct: 129 food waste separation bins were distributed to the residents of Bandar Bukit Puchong 1 to 3 to make use of food waste to be made into a source of electricity.

The Yang Dipertua of the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, said that the food waste was processed through the Biogas Anaerobic Digestion method or the producing of fertilizers through the Vermicomposting process.

“For every one kilogram (kg) of food waste sent to them, one Ringgit is paid as an initiative for the residents to participate in this programme.

“It also reduces the throwing of waste,” he said during the Food Waste Separation Programme today.

Nor Hisham said that the programme was implemented in Seri Serdang since September 2012 and was well received when they managed to collect over 50 kg a day.

“MPSJ is also planning to implement this in other areas,” he said.

It is understood that food waste collection is done from house to house since early February on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, lecturer Nur Zeatul Hamid, 36, said that she has four bins from MPSJ as recycling bins for her to separate food waste, aluminium, paper and glass bottles.

“At the beginning of the first month of this programme, it was encouraging because I could reduce daily waste disposal for up to five days,” she said.
